I thought that notes like "frt l" in BHS with no other notes implies
that the reading is pure conjecture with no MS or version support. Am
I correct? Many of these conjectures are old and seem to be worthless.

No- it means "perhaps read"- (frt l is a latin abbreviation = perhaps read)
because some mss have that variant. The variant is however an attempt to
clarify and thus evidently a scribal attempt to clean something up and
thereby secondary.
