I replied to this on another forum, but thought I'd mention my reply here too.
Instead of seeing the word "ba'u" in this verse as a perfect, why not see it
as a participle? Thus,
the IPP before it would simply be elucidating the subject of the object in
normal style. Thus, the
waw-conjunction prefixed to "Sha'ul" would carry the force of "when".
"They were coming to the land of Tzuf when Saul said to his junior ...."
