In two "traditional" editions of Malachi 3:4-24 ( the Haftarah for Shabbat
Hagadol), namely, the Hertz Chumash (Soncino) p. 969 and Koren, the zayin
which is the initial consonant at the beginning of Malachi 3:22 is
oversize. In some other editions, namely, BHS 4th ed., 1990 and the two
Plaut editions (UAHC Torah Commentary and Haftarah Commentary) , the zayin
is the same size as the other characters.
BHS and Plaut do use oversize characters for the ayin and dalit of the
Shema in Deut. 6:4, so it's not a question of a limited font.
Any explanation for the oversize zayin at the beginning of Malachi 3:22?
