OK, I'm about to pull my last few hairs out over this problem, so I hope
that someone here can help. The basic rundown is this: upgraded a
RedHat 8.0 server to RedHat 9.0; server was running amanda with a SCSI
tape changer attached; after upgrade, amanda gives the following error:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bash-2.05b$ amcheck Backup
Amanda Tape Server Host Check
-----------------------------
Holding disk /staging: 7621820 KB disk space available, that's plenty
amcheck-server: slot 2: date 20040106 label Backup02 (exact label match)
NOTE: skipping tape-writable test
Tape Backup02 label ok
NOTE: info dir /var/log/amanda/Backup/curinfo/pecans.bme.unc.edu: does
not exist
NOTE: index dir /var/log/amanda/Backup/index/pecans.bme.unc.edu: does
not exist
Server check took 15.941 seconds

Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
--------------------------------
WARNING: pecans.bme.unc.edu: selfcheck request timed out. Host down?
Client check: 1 host checked in 29.996 seconds, 1 problem found

(brought to you by Amanda 2.4.3)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, I've narrowed down the problem to the fact that the amandad service
isn't starting properly. The error I get in /var/log/messages when
starting xinetd is as follows:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jan 22 11:09:06 pecans xinetd: xinetd shutdown succeeded
Jan 22 11:09:06 pecans ypserv[11302]: refused connect from
152.19.100.63:921 to procedure ypproc_match
(bmenisl.unc.edu,protocols.byname;-4)
Jan 22 11:09:07 pecans xinetd[12193]: service/protocol combination not
in /etc/services: amanda/udp
Jan 22 11:09:07 pecans xinetd[12193]: service/protocol combination not
in /etc/services: amandaidx/tcp
Jan 22 11:09:07 pecans xinetd[12193]: service/protocol combination not
in /etc/services: amidxtape/tcp
Jan 22 11:09:07 pecans xinetd[12193]: service/protocol combination not
in /etc/services: login/tcp
Jan 22 11:09:07 pecans xinetd[12193]: service:time id:time-stream is
unique but its identical to service:sgi_fam id:sgi_fam - DISABLING
Jan 22 11:09:08 pecans xinetd[12193]: xinetd Version 2.3.11 started with
libwrap loadavg options compiled in.
Jan 22 11:09:08 pecans xinetd[12193]: Started working: 2 available services
Jan 22 11:09:09 pecans xinetd: xinetd startup succeeded
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've ensured that the appropriate lines are in /etc/services:
amanda 10080/tcp # amanda backup services
amanda 10080/udp # amanda backup services
amandaidx 10082/tcp # amanda backup services
amidxtape 10083/tcp # amanda backup services
and I've made sure that the amanda user does have permissions to run
amandad, and write to /tmp/amanda. The FQDN is listed in
/var/lib/amanda/.amandahosts and in the disklist, and in /etc/hosts. I
suppose I should mention that the server and client are the same
machine, pecans.bme.unc.edu, and that this machine is also the NIS
master for our domain. Does anyone have any ideas? Our backups haven't
worked for 3 days because of this, and I'm fresh out of things to try!
Thanks!
