Summary: latex/texlive installs broken latex / pdflatex scripts
           Product: Codex
           Version: test grimoire
          Platform: x86
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: Unknown
        AssignedTo: sm-grimoire-bugs at lists.ibiblio.org
        ReportedBy: sobukus at sourcemage.org

We just copy those from upstream, nevertheless they're broken:

There are two issues:
1. /usr/bin/latex is broken as it calls plain tex which fails because the fmt
file is done using pdftex. Looks like that:

fmtutil: /home/thomas/.texlive2009/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt installed.
 ---! /home/thomas/.texlive2009/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt was written by
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

This is fixed by calling pdftex instead of plain tex from /usr/bin/latex --
pdftex has been behind the 'latex' call in my old tetex install, too, as I
recall. DVI files are created from my sources as I expect with that change.
The fmtutil call always uses pdftex... perhaps one could hack it to use the
plain old tex instead, but I don't see the point: pdftex has been used behind
latex for a long time, even when not creating pdf output.

2. The check for presence of fmt files is broken; so every time a user runs
pdflatex or latex, fmtutil is run to create those (that). That takes time!
This is fixed by giving the kpsewhich call the name of the engine to look for.

Short, those are the fixed lines for the wrapper scripts (too lazy to attach
those tiny scripts). I would like to discuss those changes to finally put that
into the texlive spell. One could also ask upstream why they provide them in
the non-working form -- but then, we aren't using the default build?!

The latex script:
test -f "`kpsewhich -engine pdftex latex.fmt`" || fmtutil --byfmt latex
exec pdftex -fmt=latex "$@"

The pdflatex script:
test -f "`kpsewhich -engine pdftex pdflatex.fmt`" || fmtutil --byfmt pdflatex
exec pdftex -fmt=pdflatex -progname=pdflatex "$@"

Comments on those? For example ... I have the suspicion, that both pdftex calls
should just use -progname ... as that implies -fmt.
