There's nothing WRONG with using it for chroots and ISOs per se.  The point of
tune is to optimize for the most common architectures (currently i686) without
imposing the limitation of only being able to run on those architectures...

However if we build to i486 for chroot and ISO, I'd agree leaving it alone is
the best option, although -march=i486 -mtune=generic would allow for 486+
architecture while still optimizing (within that constraint) for 686
architectures which Gnu seems to feel are the most common.  

I've tested -march=i486 -mtune=generic and got these results...

tommy at galactica:~$ g++ -march=i486 -mtune=generic test.cxx -c
tommy at galactica:~$ file test.o
test.o: ELF 32-bit LSB relocatable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

It's a 386/486 file which works for our needs.  

Either way.  I personally say let it be.
