I'm not sure I entirely agree with the last comment, other distros use colour
and even positional terminal codes from their init scripts quite successfully
with framebuffer consoles. Further there is nothing special about the Linux
text mode terminal, it itself is a terminal emulator driving the vga text mode
hardware instead of a raster display. To solve all problems therefore, there
must be no visual output from the computer whatsoever. :)

As to fixing it, without knowing the exact problem, I think it's safe to say
the init scripts are doing something abnormal for newlines. Honestly newlines
are a bit insane in unix, with everything expected to output a trailing newline
but things like VAR=`echo foo` expected to strip that trailing newline.
init.d/smgl_functions redefines echo to counter that. I tried disabling this
redefinition with very little success.
