So ... I took the next step :)
The fact that initctl -r -f reproduced the problem indicated the code area where
it's happening. The whole thing is actually quite simple, though I'm not sure
what changed in the kernel and/or glibc that made it fail now when it worked
Basically, the code opened /dev/console for stdin, stdout and stderr. The
problem is, that it didn't actually close the existing stdin, stdout and stderr
first. So the messages got to whatever stdout was at that time. This apparently
changed in some (not so) recent kernel or glibc upgrade, which caused the breakage.
