if [ -f /proc/sys/kenrel/osrelease ] ; then
    cat /proc/sys/kernel/osrelease
else
    uname -r
fi

since `uname -r` can be over-ridden with a LD_PRELOAD hack it's a security risk
to use that first. However, `uname -r` does always return something so we should
use it to get something if all else fails.
