Conventional applications have little ability to detect probes or attacks, let
alone adjust their behaviour under threatening circumstances. Typical
applications rely on other components such as firewalls, host access controls
or network intrusion detection systems for protection. While third party
security barriers are reasonably effective, they do have a number of
weaknesses. The idsa project tries to help programmers add a simple form of
security awareness to their applications. Idsa does this by providing an
integrated reference monitor, logger and IDS which is accessible to
applications through a simple API. Applications can use this infrastructure to
delegate access control and intruder detection to idsa.
