It has great potential for interesting diet and long term good health. The Japanese already know about this. wakame hiziki kombu dulse nori .....can all be used in traditional Japanese cuisine and that may be the best place to get started integrating seaweed into one's diet. The Irish also use this valuable food (Irish moss and other seaweed varieties plus seaside marsh plants), Mainers and Nova Scotians. miso soup: lightly sauteed green pepper, onion, cabbage and carrot then add water for soup miso paste liquified in a suribachi and added to stock with vegetables after it becomes warm serve with plain brown rice and sauteed tofu with tamari each meal component served in separate dishes eat with wooden or china spoon and chopsticks At one time years ago for not much money you could order a giant box of dried dulse from a company in Maine called Health In A Box. There are companies in Maine and Nova Scotia that sell a nice range of culinary seaweeds. I think there is a reference to one of these in a message in the pchealth list archives: http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/pchealth homepage http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/pchealth/ message archives Eating plenty of seaweed regularly is probably one of the healthiest things you can do. I am sure there are many ways to make it palatable. Typical Asian cuisine is good for this. LL -- Lawrence F. The only exception and that needs to be proved might be kelp, like typical Atlantic kelp for example. I bought powdered kelp once from a health food store to add to the dishes I cooked for flavor and nutrition. I noticed that after a while I began to get a small outbreak of pimples on my face; at age 76 I still get pimples. When I slacked off the kelp the problem went away. I do not think there is any need to regulate your intake of most sea vegetables. Of course you can overdo anything. It is obvious that the Japanese and Irish eat plenty of seaweed regularly without ill effect. If there was a problem we would hear about it in Japanese literature on the subject. Just check out all the books on traditional Japanese macrobiotic diet by Japanese and American authors, Kushi, Ohzawa, Wigmore, Kulvinskas and many more. Daily intake of seaweed salad, seaweed in soup and stews, soaked and eaten raw should not cause anyone problems. The usual disclaimer applies for me. LL -- Lawrence F.
