I've only personally gone to some of these places but they are all places I *would* go.

Both UC Berkeley's Botanical Garden and the SF Botanical Garden are good although I personally have a preference for Berkeley's. The advantage of visiting SF's is that it's in Golden Gate Park so you can do the other things that are in the park like the Japanese Tea Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers (which is not just flowers...you can see tropicals like cacao). http://botanicalgarden.berkeley.edu/ http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/ http://www.conservatoryofflowers.org/

A major source of scionwood for all the Bay Area CRFG chapters' scion exchanges is Prusch Park http://www.pruschfarmpark.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Prusch_Farm_Park

Heirloom apple orchards within Garin Park in Hayward, CA http://www.ebparks.org/parks/garin

Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa, CA <http://ci.santa-rosa.ca.us/departments/recreationandparks/parks/lbhg/Pages/default.aspx>

Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont, CA http://www.ebparks.org/parks/ardenwood

Hakone Gardens: http://www.hakone.com/

Nurseries:

Berkeley Horticultural Nursery - Very good all-around nursery with decent fruit selection as well as CA natives, alpines, water plants, etc. Prettily presented.

Regan Nursery (in Fremont, CA) - Though known for their roses, they also have a good selection of fruit trees. I've gone down there to get things Berkeley Hort didn't have like mulberry, jujube http://www.regannursery.com/
