Some weeks ago there were some posts to the effect that the new low-chill cherries obtained from Dave Wilson Nurseries were compatible with and growing well in Florida on Myrobalan 29 C rootstock. We obtained conflicting reports from suppliers from Dave Wilson Nurseries as to the validity of this claim. To study this claim (and there is absolutely no information on the Internet that such a combination might work) I purchased a block of Myro 29 C rootstock and grafted the low chill cherries directly on about 10 of them and plums, plum cots and Zaiger's Zee Stem interstem on the remaining 40. All of the cherries leafed out and within a few weeks all died. All of the other grafts are thriving. Thus, if these cherries are indeed on Myro 29 C (spidra at speakeasy.net), they are grafted with an interstem of Zee Stem, or other compatible interstem, as the Dave Wilson Nursery has sold on Citation rootstock. If they indeed are grafted this way on Myro 29 C, that would make a much more effective combination than with Citation which has done poorly in the South, and particularly poorly in Houston, Texas.
