till a forest grew up through it and shaded it out."

Mine grows quit nicely in the understory.  There are some sites where it
is growing and spreading vigorously, yet in almost complete shade
provided by 80 foot hardwoods (some dappled light reaches the forest
floor).  The deer seem to leave it alone, so it has little competition
at that level.
