This overlaps posts from some time ago, but I still found it
interesting. Don't be discouraged by the title.

Going Back to the Source for a Heartier Apple Tree

"Grafts, genetic material and rootstocks collected during the 1990s from
wild apple trees in central Asia may revolutionize the nation's apple
industry. This material shows potential for helping breed trees that
bear popular, domestic apples while standing up to destructive diseases
and fungi, according to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists."

It might be helpful if small nurseries in dry or cold areas of North
America were able to get seed of likely lines and propagate them for
conservation plantings.
