    A melon farmer in California once told me that he only knew of one 
variety of cantaloupe that would keep well in cold storage and he was 
raising it.  It was bred for keeping, not for taste.  Compared to most 
melons I can buy from a seed catalog, the keeper tastes like cardboard.  To
