Howgate Wonder is a culinary apple, parentage Blenheim Orange x Newton Wonder Raised on the Isle of White, UK around 1915 by Mr G Wratton of Howgate Lane, Bembridge.
Howgate exhibits the same vigorous tree growth of Blenheim Orange, producing a large spreading tree. The fruit is, in the UK, late flowering - mid May. Fruit is large (in Guinness Book of Records as largest apple), red stripped and picked early October for use December to March under natural storage. The fruits have firm fine textured juicy flesh which is quite sweet when ripe with a faint aromatic flavour. Some use it to make cider (hard - full sharp) Keeps its shape when cooked.
A good picture of the apple can be found at http://www.orangepippin.com/apples/howgate-wonder.htm
