On another list, "Rick" writes of being invited to a celebration
of the Karuk Indians on the Klamath River recently:

"I had acorn soup for the first time, which is a traditional Karuk
staple. The nuts grow on the tan oak trees, and are gathered in the
fall. The nuts are dried, shelled, chopped up, and then rinsed for
several hours to leach out the bitterness. Then, hot rocks are put
into the nut kettle to cook them. The flavor of the soup was quite
bland, but it was very nutritious."
