Borers in gooseberries and currants are most obvious in the large, wilted
leaves of read and black currants; this necessitates putting your shadow on,
or at least near the plants regularly for effective control on smallscale
plantings. Remove single wilted canes, then burn or remove offsite. This
prevent the larvae within from overwintering and hatching out as adults next
spring. Pruning for widely spaced canes prevents an affected cane from
'hiding'. Cutting out old wood in favor of young canes also helps with this
open spacing.
