Those of you in more moderate climates might find this promotional story of interest. Pomegranates are increasingly popular in the US, especially with the increasing numbers of immigrants from the Middle East. Chefs have adopted the pomegranate as one of the new food trends also. I noticed last fall that the price of fresh pomegranates was down a bit in the Twin Cities. It's interesting, though, that most of the grenadine (used as a flavoring in drinks) sold here no longer contains any pomegranate juice. On the other hand, concentrated pomegranate juice, or syrup, (mostly from the Middle East) is appearing in more and more co-op and health food stores. --Sam Brungardt, Saint Paul, MN (USDA Zone 4, where spring rains have finally set in and the star magnolias, species tulips, and apricots are in bloom.)
