Hi,

Have you tried bruising the trunk of the tree?

I am told that if you give the tree a couple of good whacks with a rubber
or wooden mallet (hard enough to bruise, but not damage the bark) you
could stimulate a tree to fruit/nut.

What I have read indicates that the bruise releases hormones that indicate
to the tree it is injured and possibly going to die, so it it starts the
process of seeding itself (nut/fruit production).

But I would have thought that ring girdling would do the same thing. The
timing of the injury would be critical I think. The injury would have to
happen just prior to the setting of buds for next seasons fruit.

This theory seems to make logical sense. Root pruning can accomplish the
same result.

Take wisteria for instance... If you root prune a wisteria 18" out in a
circle, and fertilize with superphosphate fertilizer in late July, you
will have more prolific blooming the next year. This I have done with
great success. I have never root pruned a fruit though, but have seen the
trunk bruising work on a nut tree that was stubborn.

Just an idea.

Later,
Tom
