Bill,
    I looked up ethylene, and you are correct - it is only used on bananas,
avocados, pears, and to a limited extent on tomatoes.  It is an interesting
substance - discovered in Russia, and used to be used as an anaesthetic,
mixed with 15% oxygen - but was rather flammable, so when other, less
flammable anaesthetics were discovered, it's use as such was discontinued.
