Here's what I get:

[root at web ~]# strace -e connect isql -v db01 $USER $PASS
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[S1000][unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect to data source
[ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect
Process 18350 detached

(It's the same whether I use db01 or db01-2)
And here's what I get w/ the same strace on tsql, which connects
successfully:

[root at web ~]# strace -e connect tsql -S db01 -U $USER -P $PASS
locale is "en_US.UTF-8"
locale charset is "UTF-8"
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
connect(5, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(1434),
sin_addr=inet_addr("192.168.1.101")}, 16) = -1 EINPROGRESS (Operation
now in progress)
--- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) ---
1> exit
Process 18333 detached

Not sure if that helps clarify things...
