[Cc-ie] Registering the creativecommons.ie domain name

Thanks, Stephen. It appears from the whois that somebody else has registered the domain until August 2015.
There will be no specific release of 4.0 versions in Ireland as they are international – see this extract from the CC site:

What if CC licenses have not been ported to my jurisdiction?
All CC licenses are intended to work worldwide. Unless you have a specific reason to use a ported license<https://wiki.creativecommons.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions#Should_I_choose_an_international_license_or_a_ported_license.3F>, we suggest you consider using one of the international licenses. 4.0 will support official translations of the international license for those who wish to use the licenses in another language.
As of version 4.0, CC is discouraging ported versions, and has placed a hold on new porting projects following its publication until sometime in 2014. At that point, CC will re-evaluate the necessity of porting in the future.
Should I choose an international license or a ported license?
We recommend that you use a version 4.0 international license. This is the most up-to-date version of our licenses, drafted after broad consultation with our global network of affiliates, and it has been written to be internationally valid. There are currently no ports<https://wiki.creativecommons.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions#What_are_the_international_.28.E2.80.9Cunported.E2.80.9D.29_Creative_Commons_licenses.2C_and_why_does_CC_offer_.E2.80.9Cported.E2.80.9D_licenses.3F> of 4.0, and it is planned that few, if any, will be created.

All the best,

Darius

Subject: Registering the creativecommons.ie domain name

Hi Darius,
Just to let you know I released the creativecommons.ie<http://creativecommons.ie> domain name a while ago so it is now free to be registered by anyone. Given the very Irish nature of the domain name and the sense of credibility it would give to Creative Commons Ireland, I would strongly suggest you go ahead and register the domain. As Creative Commons Ireland is affiliated with Creative Commons International which is a 501(3)c Non-Profit in the U.S., the IE Domain Registry will often accept this as recognition of a charitable organisation in Ireland and you will therefore be able to register the domain for free. I had this exact experience when registering a .IE domain for a charity in Ireland that was affiliated with a registered charity in the U.K., I just had to get a letter from that charity confirming I was affiliated with them and then the IE Domain Registry allowed me to register my chosen .IE domain for free.
I look forward to future development of Creative Commons in Ireland.
Will we see the 4.0 versions of the licenses released in Ireland?

Regards,
Stephen Judge

Dear Stephen,

Thanks for your email; we don’t need the .ie domain name so you can allow it to lapse, that’s fine.

Hell Darius,
I am glad to receive your email as I was not aware who is the lead person in the Creative Commons Ireland effort. I currently hold the web domain creativecommons.ie . I have been a strong supporter of the Creative Commons licensing scheme and in other Free Culture movements. I registered it with the intent to create a website to inform the public about Creative Commons licensing and to showcase Creative Commons works by Irish creators. At the time I was a student with ambitions to also establish a chapter of the American Free Culture student movement<http://freeculture.org/> here (and subsequently also registered freeculture.ie which I have since dropped). However since then I have had a serious of health problems and I have not been able to create the website I wanted to. I did not want to let the domain drop as I was concerned it would be just picked up by a domain squatter and I wanted to ensure it is only used for a website related to Creative Commons in Ireland. This has been expensive for me as I have to renew the domain at a cost of €30 per year. I am really looking for someone to take over responsibility for the domain name and use it appropriately.

I see from you recent mailing list announcement that you are using a much longer creativecommonsireland.org domain and I am sure you would much rather use something as short and recognisably Irish as creativecommons.ie . I would be happy and grateful to transfer ownership of the domain to you or someone else in a lead position within Creative Commons Ireland. My only request would be that you allow me to keep my email address on the domain stephen at creativecommons.ie<mailto:stephen at creativecommons.ie> and that you ensure that the domain is used as I intended, to inform the public about Creative Commons and showcase Creative Commons works.
Please let me know what your thoughts are on this and I hope we can come to an arrangement. I am not looking for any money for this domain, I just need to alleviate its personal expense for me as I am currently unemployed and to find it a new appropriate home.

Regards,
Stephen Judge
