The list /was/ where you'd expect to find developers who were familiar
with BitTorrent, so perhaps a tacky use of the list, but not a major
abuse of it. Was also tacky how it was done, but that doesn't place it in
the category of spam.

Unlikely. There are web-based address book update tools, and this is one
of the things they do. Going further over the tacky line, but again it
still isn't spam.
Spam is sending the same message to thousands of addresses that you just
happen to have without regard to whether people will be interested in it.
As a job offer is something a person familiar with BitTorrent might want,
it isn't spam.
