Melchizedek was not the only non-Israelite priest to be mentioned favorably. There are also Jethro, priest of Midian, and Potiphera priest of On. But all three are non-Israelite and pre-Sinai. In other words, either only Israelite priest must be Aaronide, but gentiles, if they are in fact priests of God, of course would not have to be, or non-Aaronides were okay so long as Aaron had not yet been consecrated, but once he was, only he and his descendants could be priests. Take your choice.

It seems to me that Psalm 110 comes into play here as well, since it specifies a non-Aaronic priesthood as having YHWH's approval. Interesting stuff.
