Strictly speaking, this means before. Directions were taken from facing
east, with the right hand to the south, left hand to the north and behind to
the west.

The idea of what happened before is taken from the idea that this refers to
what went on before.

This verse is not easy to read.

This is how I understand it at the moment, and I may be wrong.
