But surely the word here is not "were" but "became". In the previous
sentence we read that the temple fell on top of the people. What is the
next thing that happened? They died, they BECAME dead. They were not
dead before this! So this is an event, not a state, and so perhaps
evidence of earlier usage and an earlier date.
