It was not created by the Catholic Church, but originates probably with 
the Protestant Gesenius.

The Samaritan script was and is similar to the palaeo-Hebrew. These 
three letters would have been distinct from one another but similar to 
the palaeo-Hebrew forms which were still used for the divine name in 
some MSS of the 1st century CE.
