Because "bribe" is the subject of the verse: "[Like] a precious stone [is] a
bribe in the eyes of its possessor."

and surely the emphasis is about the
> bribe prospering which I find extrordinarily peculiar.
I think it's meant with irony - he only thinks that he can prosper from his
"precious stone".
