The word hALAS means salt. Perhaps the reference was MATTHEW 5:13 instead of
John 5:13:

13  ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ ἅλας τῆς γῆς· ἐὰν δὲ τὸ ἅλας μωρανθῇ, ἐν τίνι ἁλισθήσεται;
εἰς οὐδὲν ἰσχύει ἔτι εἰ μὴ βληθὲν ἔξω καταπατεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
(Mat 5:13 BNT)

hUMEIS ESTE TO hALAS THS GHS; EAN DE TO hALAS MORANQH, EN TINI hALISQHSETAI;
EIS OUDEN ISCUEI ETI EI MH BLHQEN EXW KATAPATEISQAI hUPO TWN ANQRWPWN.
