Dear Doug,

>>>HH: Scholars believe that
>>>Hebrew was still spoken at this time (time of Jesus), not just by scholars but as a
>>>living, changing language.
>[Doug] I think that depends on which scholars. There seems to me to be a
>very diverse range of opinion. And on who spoke Hebrew, and why the Targums
>were necessary etc. etc. Even if the apostles may have had some or more
>Hebrew, its much more doubtful about, say Luke, and the author of Hebrews.

HH: The opinion I have comes from those who have translated the Dead Sea
Scrolls and should know most about the subject. It is in the
introductory material to _The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation_, by
Michael Wise, Martin Abegg, Jr., and Edward Cook (HarperCollins, New
York, 1996).
