To avoid exegetical fallacies, one must ascertain the meaning of a word or term at the time of writing of the text. Perhaps that is what you meant by 'current or up-to-date' meaning of a word, but it was not clear.

A word like KOLASIS (from KOLAXO) may be difficult to trace in NT meaning unless context is also considered, since it is used only a few times in the GNT text: twice as a noun and twice as a verb.

While lexicons agree that the original sense of KOLASIS was "checking the growth (of)" or "pruning" trees, and then later came to refer to some form of "punishment" or retribution, it is important still to understand how the word was used in NT times.
