Dear Ted::
I think that the most literal translation for this verse is "kidneys". The
Jerusalem Bible does translate it that way. Our endorsement is in the Text;
as well as in that the kidneys are considered the seat of feelings, like joy
(Pr. 23:16), pain (Sal.73.21), and even of will and conscience (Sal.16:7 and
26:2). God examines the kidneys and the heart, the most intimate of man (Jr.
11:20, l7:10, 20,12 and Rev. 2:23 our Text).
Now the "BUT"
We observe the emphatic "I am ", the "I" that probes, that searches, that
tests the hearts, this is God's peculiar attribute, given to Christ.
The rein, the containment of, the governing of, the restraining of (rein),
are the seat of the desires, of the heart y and come out of the mouth in the
form of thoughts.
We can say that the kidney is a symbol of the heart. The versions that
translate minds, desires, are more fluent, less fettered, more legible etc.
