Given that the Mac only has a client VM, I suspect there's more call to optimize on client VMs than you might think. And although the server VM is a pretty uniform win in 1.4, that's not true in earlier VMs, of which there are still a lot out there and shipping. (For instance, Limewire ships 1.3 as their default VM, mostly for reasons of download size.) There's no one VM we can pick and say, "We will optimize for this, and ignore all others."
