Why not mount the share as /var/spool/sorcery, rather than linking the
files. I haven't tried this with a samba share (soon, though), but I have
with separate partitions and separate drives, and it works quite well.

So I was disturbed today when I found that any attempt to cast a package
failed miserably. Digging a bit deeper, I found that the packages weren't
unpacking. This was distressing to say the least. Things like ./configure:
no such file or directory have a way of raising one's internal threat level.

My housemate exports a samba share which contains his /var/spool/sorcery.
I mount that share and have a script which soft links all of his files into
my /var/spool/sorcery.

I have no idea why this is failing when it should be unable to tell the
difference between a file and a link unless it's actively looking. Somewhat
more worrying is that if it were that distinction early in the code, then
the summon process should fail miserably, yet it succeeds by the activity
logs.

I believe this qualifies as a bug.
