Thousands of fruit trees, some almost a century old, are being ripped out
of the ground in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria's most productive fruit
growing area.

Farmers say cheap imports are destroying the local industry and around
Shepparton, one in five suppliers to the local cannery have revealed they
are suffering from depression.

SPC Ardmona recently cut its intake of locally-sourced fruit, as the
company struggles to compete with a influx of cheap imported fruit on
supermarket shelves.

Jimmy and Kamal Singh have grown fruit near Shepparton for 14 years.

Some of their pear trees are 90 years old.

This is really sad. You can see how healthy these trees are. They grow
beautiful fruit. We just can't sell it.

Mr Singh has lost his entire contract to supply fruit to the cannery and
has already had more than 3,500 trees knocked down.

"This is really sad. You can see how healthy these trees are. They grow
beautiful fruit. We just can't sell it," he said.

Right across the Goulburn Valley trees are being destroyed because of
concerns about fruit fly.
