I doubt that Rachel Carson would embrace biotechnology were she alive.

Even stronger, I can't immagine for a second that Rachel Carson would
embrace this newer nail in the coffin of a Buzzing Spring.

But I also think that Rachel Carson had she been alive would have been made aware at an early date of the deadly effects of gmo.
And I am certain that she would have been most vocally oposing gmo and that she would have made a serious counterweight against the gmo lobby. She was murdered for a reason after all. (not gmo but other industry interests)

Rachel Carson was one of the first to publicly question the very basis of the "new" wonder-pesticides of her time -- and became widely vilified via nasty disinformation campaigns by the corporate
manufacturers for doing so. Biotech's shiny promises came out of the same industrial ag stream -- featuring transgenic manipulation between species. With the added rapid regulatory rubber-stamp/green light by government, chances are it would not have taken Ms Carson very long to see through it all.

The release of the GM mosquitoes in Caribbean Islands and Brazil has not been adequately evaluated . One of my concerns is that tetracycline
pollution of soil and waterways which is fairly common in Florida will
lead to the released male mosquitoes spreading dengue fever. The gene
control is a tetracycline-repressible lethal system. It seems as if the
average American is far more intelligent than their elected politicians
and the regulators of environmental releases so, as usual, the views of
the public will be soundly ignored if not ridiculed at the time the GM
mosquitoes are released.

U.S. Public Wary of GM Mosquitoes

Most people oppose using genetically engineered male mosquitoes to
control wild mosquito populations—when they learn the potential risks, a survey released on 8 August by researchers from North Carolina State
University suggests. The mosquitoes have been released in other
countries to control mosquito-borne diseases, but have not yet been used in the United States. The survey, which polled 1211 people, is the first to gauge U.S. public opinion on the technology.

People were most receptive to the idea when the mosquitoes were
described as “sterile,” rather than “genetically modified” or
“transgenic,” says political scientist Michael Cobb, who supervised the
survey. But using the word “sterile” in public information campaigns
could be misleading, he says: When genetically engineered male
mosquitoes breed with wild females, they pass on a defective gene which
causes their offspring to die early.

Approval increased when people learned more technical information, but
when potential risks were explained—such as the possibility that the
altered genes in any surviving female offspring might cause a new
allergy, or that a more noxious animal might fill the mosquito's
ecological niche—approval plummeted to 33% for “sterile” and 17% for
“genetically engineered” mosquitoes
