G'day,

This seems like a very interesting course: well done for putting it
on...would love to go myself but will be otherwise occupied at the time.

I'm assuming that it wouldn't be the case that the aquaponics systems
promoted would not be using mined, soil-less media. People like George Chan
have developed larger scale earthen systems along the ZERI model whilst the
ebullient Will Allen of Growing Power has also developed systems use of
composts (of local food wastes) and coconut fibre (which is obviously not
sourced in Milwaukee), the latter which could be replaced by a host of other
media sourced and processed locally. I have not visited Will's facility (s)
and base my understandings on discussions I've had with students who have
been involved with his project and the various media out there on his work.

On this topic I subscribe to the view of Peter Kropotkin (1888-9),

"....While science devotes its chief attention to industrial pursuits, a
limited number of lovers and a legion of workers whose very names will
remain unknown to posterity have created of late a quite new agriculture, as
superior to the old 3 field system of our ancestors. Science seldom guided
them, and sometimes misguided - as was the case with Liebig's theories,
developed to the extreme by his followers, who induced us to treat plants as
glass recipients of chemical drugs, and who forgot that the only science
capable of dealing with life and growth is physiology, not chemistry..."

In 2010 I had the opportunity of designing the pilot for an integrated
aquaponics system as part of a localised BioChar & Energy (SynGas & Heated
Water) production complex which focussed around my own belief's that plants
that in nature grow in non-riparian soils are best grown in garden soils not
in media that treats plants as Kropotkin so eloquently described. Therefore
this system (which was never built: the clients lost their funding!) was
intended to grow vegies in a model similar to Will Allen's, where many of
the plants are irrigated using drip or spray irrigation whilst natural
riparian plants are grown in saturated media.

So bravo for putting this on and I look forward to hearing reports on the
outcomes of it especially around these matters.

All the best,

Darren Doherty
