Organization: The Save Our Seed Project

The Save Our Seed Project, comprised of nine Southeastern partners, will be sponsoring three workshops throughout the Southeast this July. The workshops will be geared toward supporting and training local growers to raise Certified Organic seed, selected in the Southeast for use in the Southeast.

Save Our Seed Workshop Dates and Locations:

*1) July 19,********^ ******** 2005 at the Full Moon Organic Farm in Athens, GA********^ *

*Presented by Cricket Rakita*

*2) July 20, 2005 at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro, NC *

*Co-presented by Doug Jones and Cricket Rakita*

*3)August 2, 2005 at Evenstar Organic Farm in Lexington Park, MD*

*Presented by renowned seed saver Brett Grohsgal******** and Cricket Rakita*

All workshops will begin at 1 p.m. and attendants will be expected to prepare by completing reading assignments before each workshop. Information about these assignments is given upon registration.

All three workshops will be led by folks experienced in seed saving in this region. There will be indoor and outdoor portions of each workshop, with a heavy focus on the genetics and mechanics of seed saving. Attention will also be focused on disease and insect management, including how to effectively select seeds that will be resistant to these pests.

The USDA’s National Organic Program requires that Organic producers use Certified Organic seed. Unfortunately, the supply of Certified Organic seeds that are selected to grow well in the Southeast is limited. The Save Our Seed Project aims to remedy this situation through education, networking, and partnership. The July workshops will be the 2^nd series hosted by the Save Our Seed project to help reach this end.

The workshops will be free and open to the public. Pre registration is required. A wholesome dinner featuring local and organic food will be included, as well as educational materials. More information, registration, and a complete schedule of workshop events are available by contacting Cricket Rakita at (540) 984-8865 or ___cricket@savingourseed.org_ <mailto:cricket@savingourseed.org>. The Save Our Seed Project is co-sponsored by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA), Anson Mills Inc., Clemson University, Georgia Organics, the NCSU Cooperative Extension Service, the North Carolina Crop Improvement Association, the North Carolina Foundation Seed Producers, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, and the Southern Seed Legacy.
