Description: People, their activities, and institutions are altering the structure and function of the planet's ecosystems in profound and often unexpected ways. This influence extends from the boundaries of ecosystems to include planetary biogeochemical and climatic processes. Since more people live in cities than in rural areas and cities are some of the most profoundly altered ecosystems on the planet there is an urgent need for models of sustainability in urban ecosystems to halt the trend. The Urban Landscape Ecology Program (ULEP) at the Ohio State University believes that a well-designed urban landscape can serve as a solution to the issues facing the urbanized environment including urban sprawl, the heat island effect, storm water run-off, nutrient loading of streams, fertilizer and pesticide overuse, waste generation, global warming, and threats to wildlife. Therefore, this first interdisciplinary course offered by the ULEP team will focus on the theory and practice of designing an ecological urban landscape. As opportunities abound for student participation in ecological landscape design activities on college campuses which serve as focal points for learning, this course will concentrate on the planning, regional and local inventory, and design of an ecological streetscape at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio as a case study. Students will gain insights and hands-on experience in methods of planning, goal establishment, site inventory and data analysis, and concepts of urban landscape design. Students will also learn about the reconstruction of native ecosystems (prairies, woodlands, wetlands), establishment of rain gardens, pollination gardens, theme gardens, song bird habitats, landscapes associated with specific buildings and edible landscapes, waste recycling, storm water utilization and management, renewable energy sources, and vegetated roof systems. The class will conclude with students completing a conceptual ecological streetscape design for the target site.

Prerequisites: At least 12 credit hours of life sciences, horticulture or architecture.
