I recall that Max Lindegger did a study about 10 years ago in Australia and established that the inks on papers, including coloured glossy papers, which had been of concern, were so modest in quantity as to represent useful trace elements rather than excesses.

Under chickens or ducks, however, there is a need to replace this kind of material very often as it collapses and ceases to have any air in it, unlike good straw - hence it can become putrid and full of anaerobic bacteria and thus a health hazard. So use it under poultry, but change it often and it will be wonderful then for the compost.

best wishes

Dennis

I am considering substituting shredded office paper for straw in my chicken coop, which eventually gets added into the garden compost or mulch. Does anyone have any experience with this or any thoughts about it? Rodale's composting book describes shredded paper as a good carbon (brown) source in composting but does not get into much detail about different types (newspaper, magazine, white office paper). Most of my paper would be typical recycled white office copy paper. There is some mention by Rodale re heavy metals in the inks found on glossy prints but no discussion of chlorine or dioxin issues in other papers. Any thoughts or experiences with this? Thanks.
