That's an old American tradition, backwoods and backalley, not often found
at The Ritz. There was an oldtyme pre-bluegrass mountain music band (Southern
Appalachian
traditional, of Scotch-Irish-English origin with possible Scandinavian,
Celtic and French roots)
called Gid Tanner and the Skillet Likkers. Most surely borne out of
depressionan-era frugality and the need to survive.

Take a mound of grits, or rice or a piece of bread and swab your plates and
bowls.
Good to the last crumb.
