Absolutely, George. Fifty percent of the world's farmers are
subsistence farmers and in places where industrialized nations,
primarily the U.S., have not imposed industrial practices and
disrupted the culture, people do live a prosperous life and
permaculture abounds.

Allan Savory (Holistic Management) has seen many examples of
this as a wildlife biologist for 20 years in his native Rhodesia (now
Zimbabwe). A striking example relates to native villages (farming
communities) along riverbanks. When it was decided to move
these people and their animals away from the rivers to "protect" the
banks, guess what? Just the opposite occured. River and stream
banks degraded and water courses became impaired with sediment
from bank collapses.
