If you're interested in offering historical perspective in your paper
(or elsewhere), urban food systems were not at all uncommon until
industrialization shifted perceived land use values towards factories
and warehouses and away from urban gardening. Paris in Monet's time
apparently fed most of its population from urban gardens, orchards,
etc. Some citations for this sort of info shouldn't be hard to find
with a bit of research.
