Thank you, Bronwyn, for volunteering for this event. I agree, the kids were great. Very interested, very enthusiastic, and more knowledgeable about honey bees than I expected of 4th and 5th graders.

I want to let everyone know that OCBA has an observation hive that members can borrow. I've attached a picture below - without bees. If you want to borrow it, plan ahead. Contact Chris Apple or me and we'll track it down for you so that you can arrange to use it.

It is a great attention getter if you are making a presentation to a school group, scout group, or any other group. It holds one deep frame of bees. Last year Randall advised me that it is best if you can find a frame with emerging brood, open brood, pollen, nectar and capped honey. Not always an easy-to-find combination, but if you can do it it makes for a great teaching tool. It worked great today. Only thing missing was the queen. I decided to spare her the trauma.

No trees or bees were killed in the distribution of this message, but countless electrons were seriously inconvenienced.

I was so happy to teach about beekeeping today at the middle school idea expo! The honey samples and bee suits were a big hit! I heard John Rintoul was A hit earlier in the morning with the observation hive. Hopefully there will be some new young beekeepers in town (:
