Hi,

A few weeks ago, and at last month’s meeting we discussed the “switcheroo”, swaping hive locations.  I had only one weak hive of three, but must say the swap worked amazingly well, and the two hives appear to be about equal now in the number of bees. I was also amazed at how little fighting went on at the hive entrances. Incoming workers carrying pollen or nectar are welcomed :- )

So if that helps at all, I recommend it.

Subject: [ocba] Rearranging hives?

Greetings OCBA,

Currently, my three hives are incredibly uneven. The strongest one has 8/10 deep frames with brood and two shallows full of honey and some brood creeping into the first super.

My other two hives are 20% that size or less, one is just a deep and the other is a deep and shallow both have laying queens and minimal honey and pollen. My question is to about rearranging and preventing swarming on the strong one, should I add another deep super or checkerboard the 1 brood box with empty frames from a weak hive and give that weak hive the brood and nurse bees? Basically do i split up the strong jive and try to build up a weak one or is it better to keep the strong one getting bigger?

Lastly, when should we be testing and treating varroa?

Thank you as always!

Bronwyn
