Walter,

Mark is using 8 frame equipment. As described on page 4 of the article <here>, four 8-frame mediums is exactly the same space as two 10-frame deeps. So Mark has a very appropriate amount of space in his year-round brood chamber (the amount that I use and recommend) and shouldn't remove any of it. But he should get it pumped up with sugar syrup to prepare for winter.

FYI, the traditional recommendation is to feed 1-1 syrup during spring and summer, and 2-1 in fall and winter. There is an interesting article by Randy Oliver in the American Bee Journal this month where he did some tests and, for him, found that it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference either way. So people shouldn't agonize over the proportions as long as they ARE feeding when they need to. And do we need to? See the article <here> for thoughts on that question.

Walter,

Thanks for the advice. I'm guessing the Apigaurd stopped the queen from laying in the lower two mediums? Both hives are strong with foragers but there is not a lot of capped brood in either for the nurse bees. At least, that's what I think I'm seeing.

You should also plan on doing another sugar shake in about 2 weeks to see how effective the treatment was.

Good evening,

I just finished up my last of treatment of Apiguard and I am not sure what my next steps are moving forward.

I currently use 8 frame mediums which I have four on both of my two hives.  Based on the advice from the Apiguard website, I placed the trays between the second and third boxes along with a empty medium box to provide sufficient space.  After a thorough inspection today, I found there is no brood or sugar water stores underneath where the tray was placed.  There are several frames of pollen but nothing else of significance.  However, there is plenty of brood and some sugar water above where the tray was placed.

There is not a lot of honey/stored sugar water so I plan on feeding both hives but I am not sure what ratio I should use now.  Since there is not a lot of brood, should I use a 1:1 or should I use 2:1 since their is not a lot for winter stores?

Finally, is it wise to reverse the upper two mediums with the lower two mediums since they are completely empty?  My fear would be a late season swarm since they might be crowded?  I only noticed one queen cup on one hive.

Thanks for any advice.

Mark
