- Subject: [ocba] To Super or Not to Super for New Hives?
- Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2016 09:49:45 -0400
Hi everyone - OCBA Class of 2016 newbies here with a question.
Everything seems to be going great - after 80% or so drawn out on the bottom deep, we added the second deep to both of our hives on June 8th. We've been feeding like crazy in Miller Feeders and just letting them be.
Today we suited up and inspected the top deep. On both hives, they are certainly 80% if not almost completely drawn out and full Mainly honey (well, sugar water honey) but some capped brood also in top deep.
Do we add a super at this point (for their winter stores) or just leave them alone? We haven't even purchased a queen excluder or any supers yet for the first year, so don't know if we need to go ahead and purchase these for the first year.
If the answer is no super, do we stop feeding or can it hurt to continue to feed them this first year?
Thanks everyone,
Sara & Rick
