I cannot support  this Light Rail until they have in place methods of getting people  to and from the stations to various areas people need to go to for shopping and medical and neighborhoods on both ends.  Buses, taxis, etc. will only add to the transportation cost to the customer not to mention parking costs.  Until then it will end up running at a loss taxpayers will be taxed for just like the subsidy for Amtrak because people cannot get off the train and easily and cheaply get where they need to go. The people pushing this visualize the European model that is fantastic.  You can arrive in a city by train then zip around with busses, taxis and subways going out in every direction with many stops along the way.   They even have huge screens on the wall where you can type in your address, it shows the map of the area and it tells you exactly how to get where you are going and how.  We are far behind Europe in people moving and public communication.
The train is the last thing to be put in place for it to be self supporting and most importantly, used.  Look at our attempts with city buses that run at a loss now.  For public transportation to work one needs to get off a train, take a bus or subway to the doctor, then another to your favorite shopping area, then off to visit Aunt Susie before going back to the train and home with another bus or subway to take you house.  All with just a couple of blocks of walking in between.

How about we all just oppose this ridiculous waste of tax money on the fine general principles of economic absurdity, physical disruption, and limited usefulness.
I expect that many in Orange County have NO interest in contributing to the cheap transport of students, doctors, and nurses among the many medical facilities in Chapel Hill and Durham.  I don’t.
And what about the rail line that already goes between those two great cities?

Many of you may have heard about the light rail that will connect Durham to Orange County.  It's fantastic news!  You may wonder what this has to do with bees?

It just so happens that Eastern Carolina Organics, 2210 E. Pettigrew Street Durham NC 27703, is a proposed site for the rail maintenance yard, and is the location of my most productive apiary.  If approved the site will be taken by eminent domain.  That said, there are two other proposed locations (Farrington Road and Leigh Village), and it is my understanding that unlike ECO Hub, these locations are currently underutilized.

If you so desire, please take time to fill out the comment portion on the flyer linked below.  It also lists public meetings in Durham and Orange County.

Here is a suggested comment fill free to cut and paste:

Putting a ROMF exterior to and adjacent to the rail line isn't sensible from a financial or environmental perspective.  It should be interior to the line and in a location that doesn't displace current vibrant neighborhoods and businesses.  Being nearby a highway for visual impact should be the lowest concern since visibility to single-car users while they're sitting in traffic is a great way to perform ongoing outreach to potential users.

I encourage you to follow the link above to ECO Hubs website and check out the wonderful work they are doing.  I will resume having open hive inspections at ECO Hub in the spring, please feel free to join me.  The inspections are posted on the DCBA Google Group.  Thank you for your support.
